CHAPTER 11 ANGELA

Angela looked out the car window, watching the trees blur as the road wound through the mountains. The windy weather had brought a cold spell to Dove Pond. The leaves wouldn’t change without a few freezes, but she could already smell the fresh chill in the air.

She couldn’t wait for fall to arrive. She loved the colors, the faint smell of smoke that drifted on the breeze, and the crunch of leaves under her feet. John used to say that fall was that delicious time between iced tea and hot chocolate. Her chest tightened and she had to blink back tears as she tugged her cardigan closer. I miss you.

“It’s chilly today,” Ella said into the quiet. “A cup of tea would be nice.”

Angela glanced at her driver, who was bringing them back from a day at the outlet malls in Asheville. Tea would be nice. “Earl Grey.”

Ella shot her an approving look. “Is there any other?”

“Good answer. Jules only has green tea and some sort of decaffeinated, tastes-like-hot-water herbal stuff, which is crap however you look at it.” Angela suspected that Jules had hidden the good, caffeinated tea, but she hadn’t found it. Yet.

“Let’s swing by Ava’s tearoom and get some. I’ve got another bake-off meeting later today, and I could use the energy.”

“They meet a lot, don’t they?”

Ella rolled her eyes. “Too much.”

Angela glanced at her watch and wondered if stopping for tea was a good idea. She’d managed to keep her outings secret from everyone but Gray by staying out of Dove Pond and always—always—being home before three, which was an entire hour before Jules was due to arrive home.

As if she knew what Angela was thinking, Ella added, “We’ll call ahead so our tea is waiting, and I’ll avoid Main Street. You can just stay in the car so no one sees you. We’ll have you home well before four.”

That could work. “Fine. I need some tea. My stomach is a little upset at your crazy driving.”

“Yeah, well, my stomach is upset by the way you yell out the windows at big, angry-looking truckers. That’s not cool.”

Angela sniffed. “They aren’t supposed to be in the left lane for a reason.”

Ella shot her an amused look, unlocked her phone, and handed it to Angela. “Want to call in our order?”

“An Earl Grey for you, too?”

“Yes, please, and some coffee cake for us both. Ava said she’s been making it from the recipe I sent her, and I’m keen to see how it turned out.”

“So long as you didn’t make it. I don’t have time to get lost in my memories today, thank you.” Still, a piece of coffee cake sounded just right. Angela called in the order and left it with a spunky teenager. The call done, she set the phone in a cup holder. “I should have asked before I ordered, but is Ava a good cook?”

“Yes, when she has the time.”

“We’ll see, won’t we?” Angela cast a curious glance at Ella. There was something different about Ella these last few weeks.
